Rural Health Pro / NSW Health initiative nurtures wellness and growth
19th March 2024
Last week, doctors and medical students from Murrumbidgee Local Health District (LHD) gathered in Wagga Wagga for an enriching experience aimed at fostering their capability, wellbeing, and professional development.
As one participant reflected, “I feel empowered and committed to creating a supportive environment".
This sentiment encapsulated the spirit of the Wellbeing, Connectedness, and Capability programs organised by Rural Health Pro in collaboration with Doctors’ Health NSW and with support from NSW Health.
The tailored activities, open to all Junior Medical Officers (JMOs) at Wagga Wagga Hospital, and medical students studying in Wagga Wagga, centred around growth, connection, and thriving themes. Participants delved into facilitated discussions focusing on leadership, building healthy teams, and fostering collegial support. These topics were carefully chosen in collaboration with the LHD to enhance skills and underscore the importance of peer connectedness in individual development.
Doctors in Training Wellbeing Forum
Interns and residents gathered for the Doctors in Training Capability and Wellbeing session, a dedicated space for pre-vocational training. Here, they engaged in collegial activities and meaningful conversations revolving around their wellbeing, capabilities, and their role in shaping professional and organisational culture. The session also provided valuable moments for personal reflection, which is essential for holistic growth.
Medical Student Wellbeing Workshop
In the Medical Student Capability and Wellbeing Workshop, students delved into learning strategies to bolster their own wellbeing and uplift their peers. This collaborative approach emphasised the interconnectedness of individual wellness and collective capability, nurturing a culture of support and growth among future healthcare professionals.
Following the program, participants echoed a resounding endorsement, with 96% expressing their desire to recommend the sessions to colleagues and attend future events. Such overwhelming positivity reaffirms the impact and importance of initiatives like these in nurturing healthcare professionals' wellbeing and professional growth in rural areas.
