First ‘New Rural GP Orientation’ of 2024 a success
26th February 2024
Last Friday 23 February, 15 GPs new to rural practice attended, and participated in, a New Rural GP Orientation workshop at RDN’s St Leonard’s office in Sydney. The workshop is designed to support GPs in transition to rural general practice. RDN Conference and Events Manager, Lindsey Eifler, said she was delighted to host the first Orientation of 2024:
“This is a hugely impactful event which sets new GPs up for the best chance of success in their new roles. There will be three more this year with the next attached to our Rural GPs Refresher Conference in Port Macquarie in April,” she said.
Amongst the attendees was Dr Mahsa Samdi who has commenced work at Coffs Harbour. "It was an outstanding experience from start to finish," Dr Samdi said. "The workshop content was insightful, engaging, and delivered with clarity. The facilitators demonstrated exceptional expertise and created a supportive learning environment. I highly recommend this workshop to anyone starting general practice in rural NSW."
NGPO workshop content includes:
- Professional orientation - an overview of General Practice in rural NSW, navigating Medicare, Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, cultural awareness, accessing GP support, pathways to Fellowship, professional and ethical responsibilities
- Clinical orientation - introduction to sexual health/family planning, introduction to mental health, introduction to Indigenous health to identify and work with Aboriginal people in a culturally safe and appropriate way, managing workplace illness or injury cases
- Social orientation - achieving work/life balance.
