Tune in to ‘The Flying Nurse’
6th November 2023
In this week’s episode of Rural Health Pro's A Healthy Exchange podcast, host Lisa Connors introduces listeners to ‘The Flying Nurse’ Prue Wheelright - a nurse, midwife, and author, currently based in Alice Springs. Despite only being in her thirties, Prue shares her experiences of working in high stress and life-altering situations in locations of extreme contrast right around the world and how she’s found balance.
Growing up in a family of Marino sheep farmers in NSW learning about the cycle of life through various droughts and the realities of life on the land, Prue says “nothing goes to plan on the farm”, and learning to readjust and be resilient are skills she now applies to her career with patients.
Prue has gone from taking care of members of the Saudi Royal Family, to living and working in Ethopia and within some of Australia's most remote First Nations communities. Having already travelled to more than 70 countries, Prue now works with Australia's Royal Flying Doctor Service on a nine week-on, nine week-off roster, which perfectly nurtures her love of caring for others with the spirit of travel. Having recently written and published her first book, Prue has no plans to slow down, with more studies planned for next year and a bright career ahead (despite it being a career she originally had no plans of pursuing)!
