How RDN helps overseas trained doctors bring their skills to rural NSW
22nd June 2021
Dr Lakshan Mendis aspired to become a General Practitioner (GP) in rural NSW, but didn’t know where to start.
NSW Rural Doctors Network (RDN) helped Dr Mendis by assisting him in the transition from a hospital doctor to a GP role in Kempsey, NSW.
“The Recruitment Team at RDN were able to help me with whatever I needed to start my career as a GP, and they made the transition so easy.”
Recruitment Services Manager at RDN, Chris Anderson, says there are three main ways that RDN helps doctors like Dr Mendis find their dream role.
“Dr Mendis moved to Australia from Sri Lanka, and there are unique challenges that doctors from overseas face in Australia, which we help them to work through.”
Identifying the right role
After identifying that Dr Mendis and his family were settled in the region and wanted to stay there, RDN made a number of introductions to local practices, and Dr Mendis was able to choose the role that was the right fit for him.
Support to land the job
The Recruitment Team at RDN can provide a range of support services to health professionals looking to work in rural NSW, including end-to-end recruitment support.
Dr Mendis said he had no idea about all the steps he needed to take in order to make the move from a hospital position to a general practice role.
“The RDN team reviewed my CV and provided all the information and support I needed to be successful. They facilitated the application for my provider number and enrolment on the More Doctors for Rural Australia Program (MDRAP). They went above and beyond,” said Dr Mendis.
Providing ongoing tailored support
RDN’s dedicated Recruitment Team provides ongoing, tailored support to health professionals, ensuring they hit the ground running in their new role.
Dr Mendis says he has felt very supported by both RDN and his practice team.
“I have found general practice to be fantastic. I have the complete support of my fellow practice doctors and the nursing staff, and I've had so many learning opportunities.”
