New diabetes clinic in Windsor (08/12/16)

Aboriginal people and those on a low income in the Hawkesbury area, can now access a bulk-billed multi-disciplinary diabetes clinic in Windsor. This new service is a joint program between the Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network (NBMPHN), Nepean Diabetes Service and Advance Medical Practice, with funding from RDN. Read more...

Primary eye health training and Outreach upskilling sessions (08/03/16)

RDN’s needs assessment for the Visiting Optometrist Scheme (VOS) found most Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) in NSW have access to primary eye care services through visiting or local optometrists and relationships with ophthalmologists. However, improving primary care workers’ confidence in basic eye care screening was identified as a need across Western NSW through the Western NSW Eye Health Partnership that is funded by the Fred Hollows Foundation and facilitated by the NSW Rural Doctors Network. Read more...

ENT surgery commences in Griffith (24/8/15)

Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) surgery has recommenced at Griffith Base Hospital to treat Aboriginal children with ear health conditions. The service was established after Griffith Aboriginal Medical Service identified a need to provide local access to ENT surgery as part of a state-wide ear health needs assessment conducted by the NSW Rural Doctors Network. Studies indicate that close to 10 percent of Aboriginal children have ear or hearing problems compared to three percent of non-Aboriginal children. Read more...

New maternity service for Collarenebri and Mungindi (9/6/15)

A much-needed outreach maternity program that provides antenatal services to Aboriginal women in two isolated rural communities has commenced. The service allows Aboriginal women to access comprehensive antenatal care on country and closer to home, and to receive timely referrals to specialised perinatal services. Read more...

Ear Bus Project is on the road (27/5/15)

Rural children will soon benefit from the new Hear Our Hearts Ear Bus Project initiative that aims to improve ear health across Western NSW. The initiative covers Dubbo and surrounding districts and there are future plans to have the Ear Bus on the road regularly, going to schools and childcare centres to educate and test students so that hearing issues can be addressed in a timely manner. New ENT outreach service commences in Ballina (1/4/15)

Bullinah Aboriginal Health Service hosted their first Ear, Nose and Throat clinic in February. Dr Puneet Titoria, who visited the Aboriginal service in Ballina from Lismore Base Hospital, advised that more than half of the that 20 Aboriginal paediatric and youth patients that attended the clinic would require further follow-up - either at his rooms or for surgical intervention. Nurse Practitioner-led Colposcopy clinic in rural NSW (24/11/14)

What began as an idea by the NSW Rural Doctors Network in 2012 has now become a significant Aboriginal women’s health service. Indeed, it is likely that the service is the first nurse practitioner-led colposcopy clinic in Australia. This means the nurse practitioner is wholly responsible for the clinic from accepting referrals, triage, addressing the results, providing follow-up and pursuing a defined education plan. The Department of Health has this month approved the NSW Rural Doctors Network 2014-15 Outreach Plan that supports 1,063 visiting medical specialist, allied health and nurse services. Read more...

Student gains unique experience on outreach visit to Lightning Ridge (18/10/13)

The NSW Rural Doctors Network supports medical and allied health students to participate in specialist outreach clinics throughout rural and remote NSW. A recent instance of this support enabled Mat McAlpine, a medical student studying at the University Centre for Rural Health in Lismore, to travel to Lightning Ridge to work with Paediatric Psychiatrist Dr Clive Smith during his monthly health outreach visit.
